Location: London, England
Show – Afro Powerjams (Saturday 2-4pm GMT; Tuesday 6-8pm GMT)
Musical styles: Afrobeat, Afropop, Afroworld
Origins: Music has always been a massive influence, back in high school on the Soul scene, I was wingman/selector to the influential DJ’s of the time. Was a member of college band, Smash alongside Shack E playing Soul and Funk, where we both forged a solid musical union that continues to Woofer.
A visit to Fela Kuti’s African Shrine in my university years, turned my curiosity to Afrobeat music. The discovery was epic and the genre quickly became my weapon of choice. My first experience was watching the man himself perform BBC (Big Blind Country) live on stage and I was as totally mesmerised! Weekly attendance at the Shrine thereafter became a must, the love of Afrobeat was born and there was no going back.
I was involved in concerts and promotions of African artistes visiting the UK in the late 80’s, so the recent emergence of Afropop has triggered a new drive as it’s been a reminder of my beginnings, as well as a perfect blend of my major musical influences.
Personal quote: I strongly believe in differentiating Afropop from Afrobeat music as a sign of respect and principle without necessarily being offensive.
